About Dr Michael Nightingale & his colleagues

Dr Michael Nightingale, Paediatric Surgeon
Michael has over 20 year’s experience in Paediatric Surgery. Originally from New Zealand he initially trained in General Surgery before undertaking specialist Paediatric Surgery training in Christchurch Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital. At completion he worked for over two years as a consultant surgeon at Starship Hospital in Auckland before returning to his current position in Melbourne in 2009.
He is a passionate educator who has been a previous supervisor of the Paediatric Surgery training program at the Royal Children’s Hospital. He has recently completed a seven year term on the RACS Committee of Paediatric Surgery as the Victorian and Tasmanian representative. He plays a significant role in the training and development of both local and international surgical trainees many of whom are now in practice both in Australasia and internationally.
Michael is deeply involved in the Paediatric Surgery community in both Australasia and Internationally. He is an executive member of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Paediatric Surgery and a member of many local and international organisations. He is a strong proponent of the highest standards of paediatric surgical care in all areas of the profession.
Michael’s clinical expertise and acumen has been recognised by his peers and he is a current examiner for the anatomy and Fellowship exams of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Paediatric Surgery.
In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his wife Sophie, a specialist breast surgeon, and his three children.
Michael’s public practice is at the Royal Children’s Hospital. His private consulting rooms are at 48 Flemington Rd, immediately adjacent to the hospital and he performs private surgery at Epworth Richmond.
Dr Billy Browne, Anaesthetists
Dr. Billy Browne is a highly experienced Paediatric Anaesthetist at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, with 15 years of clinical expertise in providing anaesthesia for children across a range of complex procedures. Specialising in anaesthesia for thoracic surgery, major oncological procedures, reconstructive surgery, and vascular access, Billy has developed a keen interest in data analytics, using evidence-based insights to improve patient care and outcomes. Committed to advancing paediatric anaesthesia, Billy is dedicated to delivering safe, effective, and compassionate care to young patients and their families.

Amanda Crooks, Theatre Nurse
Amanda is an experienced theatre nurse with over 18 years of experience, having worked at both the Royal Children’s Hospital and Western Health. She has provided assistance in a wide range of surgical procedures, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in the operating theatre. Amanda holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Perioperative Nursing and is currently working towards her Master’s degree in Health Leadership, further enhancing her skills and knowledge in the healthcare field.
